A gorgeous early access sequel with deeper combat, stronger progression, and brilliant inventory puzzles, though the shop experience does fall a bit short.

Introduction

This is an early access review for Moonlighter 2 after the Greed & Glory update. I loved the first game, and I think Moonlighter 2 is on track to be a worthy successor. There are improvements everywhere, from the gameplay depth to the progression system, but the biggest jump is probably the art style and visual presentation.

Moonlighter 2 feels like the team took the original idea and gave it the bigger, sharper sequel treatment it deserved. The first Moonlighter had that indie look and feel that worked really well for it, but this sequel looks like a much higher budget and higher quality game overall. I am happy to see the team take everything a step further.

Gorgeous Presentation

The game looks gorgeous. The color palette is amazing, and the animation work is masterful. Everything has more life to it now, from the way combat flows to the way the world presents itself between runs.

That visual upgrade matters because Moonlighter has always been about rhythm. You go out, fight, loot, return, sell, upgrade, and repeat. When the presentation is this strong, that loop becomes much easier to stay invested in. Moonlighter 2 simply feels better to exist in.

Combat has more depth and more room for run variety this time around

Progression That Keeps Moving

The progression felt really good this time around. There was always something to work toward, whether it was a new weapon, a weapon upgrade, health improvements, drop upgrades, or one of the many other systems asking for resources.

I liked that the game has many currencies, and most of them have their own purpose. Even when I did not have enough to upgrade one thing, I could usually upgrade something else. That made runs feel worthwhile because I rarely came back feeling like I had made no progress. There was almost always some part of the game moving forward.

The upgrade path keeps giving you something useful to chase

Better Combat and Run Variety

I very much prefer the combat in Moonlighter 2. It has more depth, more difficulty, and more room for runs to feel different from each other. With the amount of perks you can choose from, no two runs felt the same for me, which is a huge positive for a roguelike.

That variety kept the combat from becoming a simple grind. I was not just going through the motions to gather materials. I was making choices, adapting to what the run gave me, and building around the tools I had. That is exactly what I want from this kind of structure.

Biomes and Inventory Puzzles

The new approach to levels also works really well. Having different maps and different locations that change enemy patterns made grinding feel much better. I liked being able to switch biomes and face different enemies when I wanted a break from a specific area.

This ties into my favorite thing about Moonlighter 2: the inventory management. I cannot express how much I love it here. It is masterfully done, and it adds a completely different layer to the game. Inventory management becomes a puzzle to solve. There is no real losing there, but optimization and min-maxing become very satisfying goals.

Inventory management becomes its own puzzle layer

What makes it even better is how each biome introduces a different inventory mechanic. Items interact with each other in new ways, combos start forming, and suddenly you are not just making a combat build. You are also making an inventory build, trying to create loops and increase your equipment value for maximum returns. This was an absolute blast and one of the most rewarding parts of the game.

What Works

  • Gorgeous art direction, color palette, and animation work
  • Progression always gives you something useful to chase
  • Combat has more depth and better run variety than the first game
  • Inventory management is a brilliant puzzle layer
  • Biomes change both enemy patterns and inventory mechanics

What Doesn't

  • The shop timer feels too generous, which removes some pressure from selling

The Shop Needs More Pressure

If there is one thing I did not fully enjoy in Moonlighter 2, it is the shopping experience. It did not feel bad, but it also never felt like there was much of a rush. I mostly placed items on the few pedestals that gave me the best returns, and I never felt like I needed to fill the entire store because the timer was extremely generous.

The shop systems are good, but the selling phase could use more pressure

This might just be the min-maxer in me, but I wish there was more pressure in the shop phase to make it more exciting. The selling side is still part of the identity of Moonlighter, so I wanted it to push me a bit harder. I do like the new shop customization, the perk system, and the shop upgrade path, but the actual moment-to-moment selling could use more tension.

Shop customization and upgrades are welcome additions

Verdict

Moonlighter 2 is already shaping up to be a worthy successor. The visual presentation is a massive step up, the combat has more depth, and the progression system kept giving me something meaningful to work toward. The biggest surprise is the inventory management, which turns looting into its own puzzle layer and makes every biome feel mechanically different.

The shop side is the one part that did not fully land for me because the timer feels too forgiving and removes some of the pressure. But everything else is so strong that this is still an easy recommendation in early access. If the team keeps building on this foundation, Moonlighter 2 could become a fantastic sequel.
